A Glimpse Into the Artwork of Justin Shiels

Justin Shiels

The first time I went to a museum it changed my life. I was five or six and I remember the bright white walls and larger than life original art pieces. It moved me at my core.

That was the moment I knew I was an artist—the moment that I realized that creating was my purpose.

Before being a creative director. Before I learned graphic design. There was just an imaginative little boy with a No. 2 pencil and a 64 pack of crayons.

Why do I make art?

I make art because art is the only way I know how to let go of all the tension and anxiety that lives inside my body.

The practice of making art is like a release valve, helping me to process my feelings. It’s a calming practice that allows me the time and space to get lost in an activity.

How would I describe my art?

My art is all about my personal identity. I’m a black, gay plant daddy that was raised by strong, incredible women. That’s primarily what you see in my work.

There’s whimsy, there’s playfulness, but most often it's grounded in reality. I make bohemian art prints that feature people, plants, and abstract expression.

Where does my inspiration come from?

My inspiration primarily comes from the history of art. I like to find other people’s references and use them as my source of creative fuel.

The greats, like Matisse and Van Gogh. Pop artists like Warhol and Basquiat. Contemporary artists like Yinka Shonibare and Kara Walker.

How do I make my art?

I’ve had varying levels of productivity throughout my career. The turning point for me was purchasing an iPad Pro. It makes the process of creating art so much faster.

It’s like the ideas that live in my head can be worked and reworked rapidly. And the pressure to make the perfect line is totally erased. New technology helped me fall back in love with creating every single day.

How can people support?

You can purchase my art prints from Society6 shop. You can purchase art prints, framed art, and a variety of home items that feature my work.

I love Society6 because they allow me to focus on creating the artwork and they manage the fulfillment of production and shipping.
