How to Create a Personal Mantra to Reset Your Life

Have you ever noticed how humming an upbeat tune, even if you only know a few words, can make you feel better?

Sound can be healing.

I like to think that this is a simple idea of how mantras work. With sound and/or few words, this utterance can help you reset your entire life.

In the Hindu tradition, a mantra is a powerful sound or phrase used to transform your mind. It’s a tiny meditation that resets your mood and keeps you inspired despite your current circumstances.

Your mantra can be a sacred expression of a syllable, word, or verse that you use to help you become your best self or achieve any goal you have in mind.

I know…the word ‘sacred’ might make some tense but relax in knowing that it essentially means your mantra will be a sound or phrase that you hold with deep respect.

Like “om” or starting a sentence with “I am…”

It genuinely helps you clear out the noise and clutter in your brain and focus your intention on something simple and energizing.

Every year, I develop a new mantra to ground myself.

For example, in 2008 I focused on the phrase: “You belong here.”

Fresh out of college and in a new job in advertising, I was still defining my voice as a graphic designer. When doubts and imposter syndrome would creep in, I would repeat this mantra to remind me of the value that I brought to the company.

With continued repetition, the phrase became second nature. Ultimately, I believed it.

Over the course of many months, I stopped beating myself up when I made mistakes and instead found the confidence to speak up for myself and win opportunities for career growth.

So how do you create your personal mantra?

Sit quietly and ask yourself questions. One simple question is, “What do I want?” Try to answer this in one word or a short phrase.

This is your mantra.

My recommendation is to say it multiple times in the mirror while you’re getting ready. But also to come back to it any time during the day when you feel a little uneasy.

That’s the power of mantras. They can replace negative thoughts and emotions with a meaningful moment of self-love.

Here are a few examples to kickstart your brainstorm:

I belong here.
I am worthy of love.
I invest time and energy into myself.
I pause and think before I respond.
I am designed to do great things in this world.
